5th Governor of State of Oregon (1877-1878)
Arrived in Oregon in 1851 to set up a law practice and became a postmaster. One of the original directors of the Oregon Central Railroad Company, which subsequently became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad, he was elected Secretary of State in 1870 and 1874, and succeeded to the office of governor of Oregon after the resignation of Governor LaFayette Grover (who had been elected to the US Senate).
