Social Reformer, Educator. Officially named as the “Mother Figure of Oregon” by the Oregon Legislator. Her son participated in the Great Migration of 1843. He talked his mother into emigrated to Oregon in 1864, as an elderly widow. Witnessing the suffering of children whose parents died on the trail, she was inspired to start an orphanage in Oregon in 1848. After a few years it became Pacific University, a liberal arts college that today has a national reputation for its psychology and optometry programs.
